The History of Russell & Russell

This year, the team at Russell & Russell are celebrating our 135th anniversary. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and want to share our history and best achievements on this momentous occasion.
Our Achievements
Russell & Russell moved to the Wood Street location in the 1970s. Since then, we have steadily expanded. We now have over 200 employees in 9 offices across the North West of the UK. One hundred of those employees are based in Bolton.
With our expansion in the 80s, we built a list of prestigious achievements and accreditations. In 1988, we were awarded the Legal Aid Franchise, and in 2012, we achieved LEXCEL accreditation, followed quickly by Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) and Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS).
In 2014, our Chester office merged with our Bolton practice, allowing our services to stretch as far as Liverpool and North Wales, expand our service offering and increase to 20 partners. Learn more here.
Our Expansion
Following the success of the Chester/Bolton merger, we opened the doors to our second Chester office in 2015 - Exchange House, White Friars, Chester.
2015 was a busy year, and with our continuous expansion and modernisation, we rebranded to the excellent logo, letterheads, signage, and website that reflects Russell & Russell today.
With the new branding in full swing, we set to open more offices and expand our staff team further. In July 2016, we opened a new branch – our Newport Street legal advice centre, followed by our Westhoughton meeting space in 2020 and added our Middleton legal advice centre in February 2021.
This brings us to 2022. In the year of our 135th anniversary, we have six accreditations, nine offices, and over 200 staff members. Most recently, after calling the beautiful, historic Wood Street building our home for half a century, we moved our head office to the thoroughly modern open plan premises of the Atria in Bolton to accommodate our growing business and benefit our collaborative working environment. Atria is easily accessible with parking and a range of onsite facilities to meet the needs of our staff and clients for the future. Our team continues to go above and beyond in all aspects of every legal transaction, working towards the best possible outcomes for every client.
