In April the Legal Aid Agency’s (LAA) digital platforms suffered a Cyber Attack and as a consequence personal data from those who had applied for legal aid since 2010 was accessed. This data breach was not caused by our firm and therefore unfortunately we cannot confirm what information has been breached, the level of harm potentially caused or what action you can undertake at this stage.
The potential data that could be exposed includes;
- Full names and Contact details
- Dates of Birth
- National Insurance Numbers
- Criminal history where provided to the LAA
- Employment status
- Financial information, such as debts and payments.
We are aware that this can be worrying and we advise that if you have applied for legal aid since 2010 to be extra cautious and be alert for any suspicious activities such as unsolicited calls and text messages requesting personal information. Change and regularly update passwords and keep a check on bank accounts and your credit report.
Further information on how to protect yourself from the impact of a data breach can be found on the NCSC website.
Updates from the LAA can be found here and if you have any concerns please contact the Legal Aid Agency directly as at this stage we do not have any substantive information to assist.
