Kevin Liston recently hosted a criminal law masterclass at the University of Bolton School of Law, discussing everything from pursuing a career in law to Kevin's career path.
Around 15 students attended the talk, and Kevin spoke about a variety of his career highlights and recent learning topics the students had undertaken in real-life scenarios. Using a case study, he also went through an average criminal case from arrest to conclusion.
Kevin spoke of the students' enthusiasm when he returned to the office. He reminisced about his once youthful and enthusiastic mindset!
What questions were asked?
Towards the end of the masterclass, there was an opportunity for students to ask questions. Some of Kevin's favourites included:
- What are the composite elements of a crown court robe?
- Can you invent a defence for a client?
- How do you cope with clients who may be unpleasant or who have done unpleasant things? In response to this one, Kevin highlighted that lawyers are not there to judge but to provide an objective advisory role, irrespective of personal opinion as to the facts.
Summary
The consensus was that the masterclass greatly benefited all in attendance, providing real-life flesh to the academic bones of what they have been taught thus far.
Kevin and other members of the Russell & Russell team are excited to host and attend other events and masterclasses in the future, and we will be sure to provide ongoing updates on this.
Thank you to the University of Bolton School of Law for facilitating this masterclass.
